Busy with birds in the Cooks Lane area over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Best concentration was on one of the less-frozen lakes, where I counted:
Mallard c. 160
Canada Goose c . 75
Teal 3
Tufted Duck 1
Cormorant 1
In the hedgerows and fields around Cooks Lane itself, good numbers of Marsh Tits, Coal Tits and Long-tailed Tits, several Fieldfares [...]

Brief visits to Awbridge a couple of weeks ago yielded an extremely ragged Silver-washed Fritillary on buddleia near Cooks Lane, and several Marsh Tits along Coombe Lane, along with many of the usual woodland birds.

Silver-washed fritillaries were back and easy to see in their usual spots along Coombe Lane today. There were two beside the road where the powerlines cut across the valley, and two a little further along where there is another decent clump of brambles. Restless, but not too shy, one or two fed happily on the [...]

In the paddocks, there were several [...]

A miserable weekend, but Marsh Tit again around Cooks Lane – after a couple of years of hardly seeing them at all here, it’s good to see them around.
Too much rain to explore more widely, but on the plus side the pools at Fishlake Meadows should be filling up with water (and ducks) by now. [...]
